Paul Benjamin

Paul Benjamin is the senior director at Cheadle Thompson & Haysom. He is a former Professor at the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand with a National Research Foundation B – research rating.

Paul advises a range of government departments at the highest level. He has a profound understanding of the relationship between law and policy and has played a key role in developing major policy instruments, including Green Papers on the development of new employment standards, employment and occupational equity and proposals for a new public service. Paul was the principal drafter of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, 1997 and has been centrally involved in the drafting of a range of laws for the Departments of Labour, Minerals and Energy Affairs, Health, Public Service and Administration and Trade and Industry. Paul has consulted extensively to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and in this capacity has participated in major labour law reform processes in Kenya, Tanzania and Lesotho.

He has served as an acting judge in the Labour Court and is a prolific legal author and commentator. Paul is co-author of South African Labour Law (Juta), the leading commentary on employment law in South Africa.
