Gideon du Plessis

Gideon joined the trade union Solidarity on 1 November 2008 and on 1 August 2012 he became Solidarity’s General Secretary (GS). In his position as GS, Gideon represents the union as its principal or chief negotiator at multiple South African industry forums, worker organisations, national and government initiated forums. He manages a team of labour relations specialists and union officials. The Health and Safety and Labour Relations Training departments also report to him.      

Before joining Solidarity, he was employed from June 1997 to October 2008 by Compass Group PLC, the world’s largest facility management group. As Group Employee Relations Manager, he was responsible for the overall employee relations function in the 16 African countries the group operated in.

Gideon started his professional career in 1994 at the Department of Constitutional Development as a senior constitutional planner and was mainly involved in conducting global constitutional research in support of the drafting of the new South African Constitution.

Gideon matriculated from CR Swart High School in 1987 in Pretoria. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1992 from the University of Pretoria (UP) and an honours degree in Political Science and Labour Sociology from UP in 1994.

Gideon is a board member of the State Diamond Trader and Minerals and Petroleum Board. He acts as media spokesperson for Solidarity and regularly participate in national and international radio and television debates on matters relating to labour relations and other topical issues, and frequently write opinion pieces for South African newspapers, business magazines and various other media platforms. He is a regular participant as panellist or speaker at conferences and seminars.
